Rick Deeks started working with jewelry and metalsmithing in 1975. Having grown up in
the West, he began making Native American jewelry. Feeling increasingly uncomfortable
producing artwork of a culture to which he did not belong, Rick searched for designs from
his own Welsh, Irish and Scottish heritage.
He studied the designs and metal smithing influences of the Celts, from the
Hallstat period 7th Century BC and the La Tene Period 4th Century BC down to the great
flowering of Celtic Christian art such as that found in the Book of Kells, the Book of
Durrow and the Lindisfarne Gospels.
Rick moved to Oregon in 1980 and studied under the tutelage of Professor Max Nixon at
the University of Oregon, perfecting his engraving skills. The application of Celtic designs
through hand engraving of silver and gold creates this unique jewelry by Rick Deeks.
There is a great deal of "Celtic jewelry" currently on the market which is the result of a
"factory" approach, utilizing acid etch or sandblast techniques. These pieces can not match
the pure beauty and inspiration of the hand-crafted work of this gifted artist.
